As the song says, “Breaking up is hard to do!”
The end of an intimate relationship is always hard for both partners involved, especially if you’ve been together for a long period of time.
But does a break up always have to mean the end of a relationship, or is it possible for the flames of passion to burn brightly once again?
If you’ve just come out of a relationship and you’re looking for a small glimmer of hope, or some solace in the fact that sometimes people do get back together successfully, then I have some good news!
Not all the time, but it is perfectly possible for a couple to re-kindle their romance, even after they’ve split as “enemies.”
Pink and Carey Hart
Probably my favorite example of a couple who’ve broken up and then created a very public “Getting back together success story” is singing superstar Pink, and hubby Carey Hart.
The couple met back in 2001 at the X Games. After a passionate 4 year relationship singer Pink (Alecia Moore) proposed to Hart while he took part in a Motocross race. She held up a sign in the pit lane which read, “Will you marry me?”
Hart obviously thought his girl was pulling his leg, until she held up another sign which read, “I’m serious”.
They eventually tied the knot in Costa Rica in 2006, and to begin with all seemed to be going well for the newlyweds.
However, after rumors circulated in early 2008 that the couple’s marriage was in trouble, the singer confirmed that she and Carey had separated. Hopes of a reunion looked all but dashed, especially after Pink penned a song called “So what?” where she seems to call her then ex a “Tool”.
Surely after such a public attack there’d be no way back for the couple?
True love prevailed, and after being spotted together on a few occasions the couple went public that their relationship was back on. Not only were they back together, but they hadn’t officially got divorced yet.
Awwww, ain’t that sweet?
Well, for those that don’t know, this story of reunion gets even sweeter because midway through 2011 the couple welcomed their first child into the world. Willow-Sage was born virtually 10 years after Pink and Carey first met, and the happy family is often spotted in public looking more “together” than ever.
So what can we learn from this getting back together success story?
Well, the first lesson is:
No matter how bad things seem at the time you break up, no situation is insurmountable – The anger and hurt that Pink went very public with seemed to suggest there was no way back for the couple. Yet, even though at the time things seemed past the point of no return, the deep love the pair had for each other was enough to pull them back together.
The second lesson?
Communication is key – One thing the singer was always very open about was how the couple stayed in communication; even while they weren’t together. They discussed their situation very candidly and while things may have got heated sometimes, through open communication they were able to talk through their problems.
The third lesson?
Friendship is vital – Something very obvious about Pink and Carey is how much of a great friendship they have. It’s so important to be with someone who isn’t just a lover, but a best friend too.
That way even during times when the relationship may be struggling, your friendship may be enough to hold you together.
In fact, after Carey’s brother died in 2008 after a Motocross accident Pink was there for him as a friend and confidant, and it’s believed it was from that point they rekindled their romance.
Of course Pink and Carey’s success story is just one of many. There are plenty of couples around the world that split up only to get back together later on.
Is it a common occurrence?
You have to assume that the majority of couples who end their relationships do stay separated, and it would be wrong to say every partnership can be put back together after break up.
That said, with good communication, time, and understanding there’s no reason why you and your ex can’t find your break up was nothing but a mistake. If you’re hoping for a reunion with your ex the best thing to do is give them space.
Be sure you keep things as amicable as possible, and certainly don’t go bad mouthing or humiliating them in public. It’s highly unlikely they’ll want to know you after you’ve placed an ad in the paper telling people “how small his manhood is!”
Pink may have got away with it with her “So what?” track, but you may not be so lucky!
